Podiatry is now the accepted term for a foot specialist. It has superseded Chiropody as it is considered a more accurate description of the scope of treatment provided. Historically Chiropody referred to palliative care of both hands & feet and hence it was considered appropriate to adopt a more fitting title used by our professional colleagues throughout the world. Both titles are now protected & therefore only those who are HPC registered are allowed to call them a Podiatrist/Chiropodist. Also only Podiatrists who have graduated from a University recognised by the Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists are allowed to attain membership of this recognised body (MChS) and are the only practitioners allowed to work in the NHS.
The scope of treatment offered encompasses all aspects of foot care after the patient has been fully assessed. The clinic specialises in help for diabetics & for those suffering musculoskeletal conditions e.g. Rheumatoid Arthritis. Also nail surgery is offered which is a permanent solution to an ingrowing toenail & biomechanical assessment for mechanical problems which cause foot & lower limb pain & discomfort. This may involve the provision of a suitable orthotic/insole which would help improve foot function & thereby reduce stresses contributing to foot pain.
